Coffee. Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people drink it to wake up, some people drink it to live. Coffee lovers come in different shapes and sizes, and the “perfect cup of joe” depends on the person. Some people like a little extra milk, others cream, and then you have the purists who love the untainted darkness of a black coffee.
There’s no right or wrong way to drink your coffee, but there ARE right or wrong ways to make your coffee. Whether you’re using a drip machine, French press, or pour over, it does not matter what you put or don’t put in your coffee. The real game changer is nailing down the proper brew ratio! Simple as that.
If you want to put a full tin of coconut milk in your mug, then that’s your prerogative, but it does matter if you mess up the coffee to water ratio. This ratio changes depending on who you’re talking to, but for the most part anywhere from 1:16 to 1:18 (coffee:water) is what you’re looking at for your standard drip/filter brew. For a French press, you might want to tweak this based on your preference and the roast you’re using!
Based on this ratio, for every 1 gram of coffee, you should be using anywhere from 16-18 grams of water (1 gram of water =1ml). You may find you like a stronger coffee, so maybe you’ll want to start with 1:16 and adjusting accordingly, or perhaps you enjoy a lighter and more subtle coffee, so the 1:18 mark might be better for you!
Ultimately, it all comes down to you and your preferences. I personally enjoy a stronger cup of joe, but that’s the fun thing about coffee… you can play around with different brewing methods and measurements to find what works for you!
